The Complete PersepolisThe Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Persepolis is an artfully crafted graphic novel/memoir of a woman’s life growing up in Iran, escaping to Austria to continue a liberal education, and then returning to Iran as an adult and readjusting to the reality of life as a woman living in a conservative regime. The tragedies of wartime in Iran are told honestly and offset with stories of rebellion, humor, and love. Marjane Satrapi shows us how to falter, learn, and continue to strive for happiness, equality and personal knowledge. This story will give teen and adult readers around the world the chance to view a different way of life with open eyes, and will humanize a culture that is often villainized in Western media. Warning: Strong language, violence and mild sexual content are included.
